"because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved." (Romans 10:9-10, ESV)
If you have children or have ever spent much time around children, then you know they are very inquisitive. A recent study indicated that parents are asked nearly 300 questions a day from their 2 year olds… That’s a LOT of questions! Even as we grow older we continue to ask questions: Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?
In our #Memorize2019 verses this week, Paul answers the most important question we could ask, “What must I do to be saved?” The answer… Confess and Believe. Confess what, believe what? The Gospel! Jesus is Lord, He died the death we deserved, and God raised Him from the dead, providing victory over sin and death, and eternal salvation for those who have faith in Him. That is amazing news!
This amazing truth is not reserved for the elite – learned scholars, or refined, skilled craftsmen… It is near to us, and available to us… even our children can believe and confess that Jesus is Lord! There’s no amount of work we could ever do to be good enough to be saved. We must believe this truth in our heart – with our mind and even to the very core of our being, and then confess it with our mouths.
We confess many things in our daily lives: weather, politics, sports, frustrations, joys, etc. – often becoming quite passionate in our confessions! How often do we confess Christ and the truths of Scripture? What lies within our heart is what comes out of our mouth! This summer, our Wednesday EQUIP study is reminding us to fight against worldly distraction and keep the “Gospel Above All.” We were reminded last week that one way we keep the Gospel above all is being saturated with God’s Word. The more we hide God’s Word in our hearts, the more it will be our confession to others.
Would you believe the Gospel and confess Jesus is Lord, raised from the dead, and be saved today? Christ-follower, to whom will you confess the truths of God’s Word this week?
