“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” (Genesis 1:27, ESV)

God, the Author of all Creation, reveals Himself to us in two ways.  First, through the special revelation of His Word and second, through the natural revelation of what He has created.  Every time we read the words written in the Bible, God reveals Himself to us and speaks to us.  Every time we look outside at His creation God is showing Himself to us.  The sun, the stars, the ocean, and the trees, all created by God designed on purpose to reflect His glory.  On the sixth day of creation God created man. In His image, in the Imago Dei He created him; male and female he created them. Every human being ever created was done so in God's image to reflect God's glory.

There are seven billion images of God all over the world created to know him, love him, and show him. The struggle is that ever since the fall, all of humanity has missed the point.  We have decided to worship the creation instead of the Creator.  We have decided to crave food instead of the very one who has provided the food.  We have decided to glory in ourselves instead of glorying in the one who created us.  We have decided to be the kings and queens of our own castle instead of submitting to the one true King.  The very image of God we possess has been marred by our sin ever since the fall.  By Gods mercy and grace we have a solution, a new creation, a new Adam, a redeemer, Jesus Christ.  “Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of Heaven” (1 Corinthians 15:49)

Redemption was God’s plan before the creation of the world.  As God made Adam in His image, so He newly creates believers giving us a new self as Colossians 3:10 puts it, we “have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.” The more we renew our minds in the knowledge of our Creator through the studying of his Word the more we will be able to reflect his glory.

In an age where pets are taken better care of than humans, racism still reigns in the hearts of sinful man, babies are ruthlessly murdered by abortion, and men and women can have surgeries to change how God created them, this verse looms larger than ever and should ring truer now more than ever.  As believers we have the privilege of reflecting God to a broken and sin stained world.  May we speak, think, and live in a way that images the Imago Dei.
